Dota and Tarrazu are both part of Los Santos, a coffee-growing zone in Costa Rica’s central highlands. Our farm is in Santa Maria de Dota, inside this zone — here is what actually defines the growing conditions here, without the generic “origin story” language that could describe almost any highland coffee region.
Altitude and Soil
Los Santos grows Coffea arabica exclusively, at altitudes ranging from about 1,200 meters up to over 1,900 meters above sea level, on volcanic soil, with a distinct dry season and rainy season each year. Our own lots sit within this range depending on the plot and variety.
Why Altitude Matters for Buyers
Altitude is one of the reasons we grow different varieties in different parts of the farm — our Caturra and Catuai sit in the 1,200–1,700 meter range, while our Geisha is planted above 1,600 meters. If you roast professionally, altitude and variety together are a more useful starting point for evaluating a lot than the region name alone.
